Atlanta Cultural Strategy & Marketing

Research, strategy, partnerships, activation, and content for brands making real decisions about Atlanta.

ButterATL is Atlanta's culture channel. We know the people, places, and things that make this city what it is, and we know how brands connect to them without missing the room. The best brands understand that. The ones people love don't sit outside culture and advertise at it. They show up inside it and belong there.

Most brands miss this. They hire a media buyer, run a generic activation, and wonder why Atlanta never showed up. Knowing what's real here, what the city co-signs and what it clowns, is the work that happens before any campaign, and it's what we do.

Brands call us to figure out how to enter the Atlanta market, to understand a specific community inside the city, to choose the right partnership, to pressure-test an idea before it gets built, to develop a campaign, or to plan an activation. If the decision touches Atlanta, that's the conversation we're built for.

What we do

On paper, that breaks into pieces. In the room, it's one conversation.

Research and briefing: the market picture, the community context, and the questions worth answering before you spend a dollar in Atlanta.

Strategy: the plan for how a brand shows up, who it talks to first here, and what it should leave alone.

Partnership work: matching brands with the right people, properties, and rooms in the city, not a list pulled from a media kit.

Activation and events: building the live moment, on the ground, from concept through production.

Content: the creative that carries the idea, made in Atlanta's own language.

Distribution: putting the work in front of the audience across ButterATL and Butternomics, where it already has trust.

Most brands need more than one piece. Few need just one.

Why the combination matters

Brandon Butler built that knowledge over almost 20 years in marketing, watching which neighborhoods, artists, restaurants, and moments actually move people, and which ones are played out. He turned it into ButterATL in 2017, and it's been the company's edge ever since. Brands hire us for that knowledge, and then to build on it. Our own reporting on the city lives in the Atlanta culture guide, and the way we plan around Atlanta's calendar is in our culture planning calendar.

That knowledge comes from publishing in this city for years, with an audience that already trusts what we cover. We run cultural properties Atlanta actually shows up for: 404 Day Weekend, produced with The 404 Collective alongside Atlanta Influences Everything, Finish First, and the Trap Music Museum; the Creatives of Color Summit; and the Weekend Pack, our weekly events segment with Fred Blankenship on WSB-TV Channel 2. On Butternomics, we sit across from the founders, creatives, and operators building the city and put those conversations on the record. All of it feeds the relationships and the execution history a brand borrows when it hires us.

The work

Krystal asked us to make its Northside Drive flagship say Atlanta. We led concept, creative direction, cultural strategy, and content, working with build partner The Spice Group on four ATL culture murals, a Bankhead graffiti room, custom neon, and a jukebox loaded with only Atlanta artists. Atlanta Magazine, RestaurantNews, and The Atlanta Voice all covered it. See the work

For 404 Day, we worked inside The 404 Collective, alongside Adidas and The Athlete's Foot, to design a limited-edition Superstar built for the holiday, tuned to the details only the people who built the day would catch. See the work

Georgia Tech brought us in to open its 2023-24 basketball season loud. We produced the slam-dunk showcase, brought in the host and judges, and pushed the night across our own channels all week, ahead of a post-show set from NLE Choppa. See the work

Leading it or joining your team

We can lead the work directly, or sit inside a team that's already built. The brands that call us usually already have a creative agency on the campaign and an experiential shop on the build. What they're missing is someone who has lived here, built here, and knows which ideas Atlanta claims and which ones it never picks up. That seat is ours. Your agency keeps the wheel. We're in the room where the ideas get made, so the campaign doesn't miss.

For the agency-partner version of this work, built for teams that need Butter running alongside them on the ground, see Atlanta Market Partner.

Who's behind it

ButterATL is founder-led. Brandon Butler started the company and runs it as CEO, and hosts Butternomics, where he sits down with the people shaping Atlanta's business and culture. His knowledge of the city runs through the strategy work, but the team, the properties, and the audience are what make it repeatable past any one meeting. More on his background: Brandon Butler.
