The Dungeon house

Airbnb shared news today that the southside Atlanta home whose basement became the famous Organized Noize Productions studio known as “The Dungeon” to fans of OutKast and Goodie Mob, is officially becoming a place you can temporarily rent for an overnight stay.

Starting Friday, June 25 at 1  p.m., Dungeon Family fans and classic Atlanta hip-hop enthusiasts can request to book a stay at the property once owned by producer Rico Wade’s mother, whose dank basement took on the moniker “The Dungeon.”

You may recall that Big Boi announced back in January 2019 that he’d purchased the brick Lakewood Heights home.

Now, the legendary Dungeon Family member is inviting music fans to experience an overnight stay in the historic building where such early Organized-Noize-produced albums as Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik and Soul Food were made.

Guests whose requests are accepted (there’s a whole application process) will get to stay either June 29, July 1, or July 3. The chosen ones will not only get accommodations for sleeping and showering, but also soaking in historic scenery of The Dungeon, such as graffiti and signatures hand-written in the early 1990s by Andre 3000 and other Dungeon Family members on floorboards that served as ceilings for the then-teenaged rap talents.

If chosen through the application process, aspiring musicians will even have the option of making music in The Dungeon’s Yamaha-outfitted, in-home recording studio.

The rooms inside the house will all be styled to resemble some of the key Atlanta landmarks and locations that inspired those early Goodie Mob and OutKast albums.

You’ll even have car service in the form of an Escalade, which will take you to and from The Dungeon in style, as long as you’re within a 30-minute drive of the house.

In a statement provided by Airbnb, Big Boi spoke about how it all came together.

“Atlanta is my home, and I grew up with The Dungeon Family in this house,” says Big Boi. “We would spend hours hanging out in the basement, writing rhymes and putting together beats at all hours of the night. Since purchasing the home, I’ve been excited to open its doors and welcome the next generation of artists to the space that inspired countless songs.”

In recognition of the significant impact of music education on Big Boi’s career and his own involvement in the cause, Airbnb even says it’ll provide a one-time donation to Atlanta Public Schools Music Department, with the intent to help expand resources and increase access to music education for kids aged K-12th grade.

The brilliant idea doesn’t just provide an answer to the question of what Big Boi planned to do with The Dungeon after his purchase two years ago. It also coincides with June’s status as Black Music Month, which might as well be renamed “Atlanta Music Month” because we so dominate the landscape.

This summer is also the 25th anniversary of Outkast’s ATLiens album. So there’s plenty to celebrate.

Remember, your chance to book The Dungeon begins June 25. Mark your calendars, and stank us later.
